TRAINING AND ONGOING TRAINING

At the heart of the process of hiring an employee who has FASD is the training that will be provided. With proper training and supervision, employees living with FASD can become longterm assets who contribute to the success of a business. 

Please consider these three important instructions while developing the training an employee with FASD may receive:

  1. Visual and Hands-on
    Training through instruction will always remain a great place to start. However, without further instruction employees with FASD will struggle to recall and interpret these directions on their own. Be sure to include demonstrations, videos, practice times, reading materials and a pen and paper so the employee may make notes or have notes provided for them. Allow the employee to practice as much as they like before completing a task on their own. Example: A cashier that is required to memorize the cashier's till and all its functions. Provide an outlined diagram for them to write on and make notes. It can be kept with them for months to come.
     
  2. Regular Training Opportunities
    Becoming good at one's job is a daily process and any changes that are made require training and practice. Often a job can change when a new menu item is introduced, different inventory is carried by the store or technologies change. Being sure to offer training opportunities that address these changes will decrease the likelihood of mistakes being made or questions not being asked. Offering training or re-training during quarterly intervals or semi-annually helps ensure that employees are maintaining job standards and being used to their full potential.
     
  3. Supervision 
    Providing employees with constant feedback on progress helps to guide results in the right direction. Without proper supervision, employees have more opportunities to make mistakes and become confused. Proper supervision involves great leadership, respect and integrity. Critiquing an employee's job performance can be difficult on both the supervisor and worker. Maintaining the employee's dignity and self-confidence through the critique will imrpove their ability to complete their job. Having behaviour to model in the workplace should come from a supervisor. Employees will be watching to see how a supervisor talks to a customer and how they treat other employees
